Facts vs. myths about kidney stones

MYTH:
Kidney stones cannot be prevented1
FACT:
The kidneys work by filtering out waste into the urine while minimizing water loss. When urine is very concentrated, there are a lot of waste in the urine. With the right conditions, these wastes may form crystals (like salt crystals from sea water). Therefore, drinking water can help to dilute the urine and prevent stone formation

MYTH:
If I don’t develop any symptoms after diagnosed with kidney stones, I don’t need to return for check-up1
FACT:
Once your doctor has confirmed a diagnosis of kidney stone, even if you do not experience any symptoms, you are required to return for routine checkups to monitor if the stone is growing or causing any blockage from the kidney to the ureter

MYTH:
Dietary modification is the only way to manage kidney stones1
FACT:
Dietary changes is the first-line of treatment in managing kidney stone. However, other medications such as diuretics and citrate preparation can help in reducing stone formation

MYTH:
Drinking apple cider vinegar can help dissolve and flush out kidney stones2
FACT:
Although there are studies that showed apple cider vinegar is effective in reducing formation of kidney stones, more studies are needed to confirm this. People with diabetes should take this drink with caution as it may disrupt your blood sugar control

MYTH:
Lemon juice helps to break up small kidney stones, allowing them to pass more easily2
FACT:
Although lemon juice can help prevent bacteria growth and provide vitamin C, a great deal of lemons would be needed to make a huge effect, such as breaking up small kidney stones
