MYTH:
Gout is not hereditary. If one of my parents has gout, I will not have gout1
FACT:
If a parent, sibling or close relative has gout, you are more likely to get gout. However, environmental factors, such as diet high in purines can also trigger gout

MYTH:
Gout is more common in men at any age2
FACT:
Gout occurs more often in men because women tend to have lower acid levels. However, after menopause, women’s uric acid levels can approach those of men. Therefore, men tend to develop gout earlier (between ages 30 and 50 years old) while women generally develop symptoms of gout after menopause

MYTH:
People who are overweight should not be worried about gout2
FACT:
People who are overweight produce more uric acid and their kidneys have a more difficult time eliminating uric acid

MYTH:
Drinking home remedies such as ginger and apple cider vinegar can reduce uric acid levels1
FACT:
Although there are studies that suggest natural remedies may help lower uric acid levels and prevent gout attacks, only consuming these foods may not be enough to treat or prevent gout. Check with your doctor which home remedy will work and which will not

MYTH:
Aromatherapy using plant-based essential oil helps to relief pain due to gout1
FACT:
Some of the essential oils such as lemongrass oil are used to treat gout but their effectiveness is still unclear. Check with your doctor if you’re planning to use an alternative therapy, even if it’s generally considered safe
